This section highlights various organizations that are involved in promoting sustainability and green initiatives in conservation, cultural heritage , museums and related fields.

American Alliance of Museums: The Sustainability Excellence Award

The Sustainability Excellence Award is a PIC Green signature program that educates, facilitates, and encourages green practices in museums. Started in 2014, the award recognizes sustainability efforts in facilities, programming, and exhibits in both large and small institutions. PIC Green views the award as an opportunity to share sustainability stories and encourage museums to develop and educate visitors about green practices. SEA winners are honored at the AAM Annual Meeting and MuseumExpo.

Winners also receive a gift donated on their behalf to the “Adopt an Acre of the Northern Rockies” program from the Nature Conservancy.

Arizona State University Sustainability in Science Museums

The Sustainability in Science Museums Program supports science museums in their efforts to expand their sustainability programming through content-rich trainings, interactive activity kits and other resources that museums can use to promote sustainability science and practice. Ultimately, this program is developing a network of science centers and museums that have a shared goal of increasing public understanding and interest in sustainability action on a global scale.

Museums Association Sustainability Campaign (UK)

M&CC: Museums and Climate Change (Australia)

The MCC Network was started as a response to the urgent need to engage a broad public in the issues of climate change and the Anthropocene, the Age of Humans.

Museums are trusted sources of knowledge, valuable sites for gathering, creating and sharing powerful stories. They are places that enable audiences to slow down and reflect – all important for reaching the goal of engaging hearts and minds. As more museums step into considering past, current and future challenges, more outreach, education, exhibitions, and multimedia resources are being created.

The insights, ideas and inspiration that spring from these experiences are important to share.

The Coalition of Museums for Climate Justice mobilizes and supports Canadian museum workers and their organizations in building public awareness, mitigation and resilience in the face of climate change.

Coalition Goals

1. Help build internal awareness of climate change responses within the museum community
2. Support museums in strengthening public awareness and mitigation of climate change
3. Mobilize museums as participants and activists in public discourse on climate change.
4. Empower museums to lead by example by providing tools and resources to do so.
